Module 5: Communication
Learning objectives:
- Describe when and how to conduct a meeting with the most responsible physician
- Describe key elements of developing a therapeutic relationship with the patient and family
- Discuss an approach to questions raised by family about organ donation when the patient is still receiving active medical care
- Describe an approach to discussing the neurological exam findings with the family
- Describe an approach for introducing WLSM to a family or SDM
- Describe how to use a patient and family centered approach when developing an end of life care plan
- Discuss how to introduce donation as part of end of life care
- Describe how the medical team can provide a more individualized, humanistic end of life care plan for patients and families
- Discuss ways to ensure family feel supported after consenting to donation
- Discuss specific support processes that may be needed on the day of organ recovery
- Recognize how to identify your own feelings and biases towards a family who has declined donation
- Describe how to support a family who has decline donation
This curriculum is under review for accreditation by the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada and is approved by Dalhousie University.
This module has been developed by Canadian Blood Services in collaboration with the organ donation organizations in Canada, the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, and many generous volunteers from the Canadian Critical Care community.
