In Sept. 2021, the Organs and Tissues for Life Education Resource Portal was launched.
This learning resource portal was created by Canadian Blood Services in collaboration with Canada's organ and tissue donation and transplant organizations and community partners. The aim is to collect and share age-appropriate, easy to access, and easy to use teaching resources with educators, parents and students to spark interest in and conversation about organ and tissue donation and transplantation. Resources are sorted by age and grade, as well as type of media and subject and many are presented with additional materials to support lesson planning and flexibility.
Project Outputs:
·The Orgamites: elementary school teaching materials (free)
For teachers and parents of elementary school-aged kids (Grades K-8), the Orgamites, a friendly group of animated characters will help kids and their families learn about their mighty organs, keeping healthy and being kind to each other and the planet. Learn more about this global program at Orgamites.ca
·Free resources for high school teachers
Free programs and resources suitable for high school-aged students (11+) offer cross-curricular links to many subjects including science, physical and health education, civics and social responsibility.
·Engaging tools for teachers
The site is designed to give teachers materials to educate and engage students, empowering them to discuss organ and tissue donation with their family and friends, including lived experience stories from patients and donors in their province or local area. The variety means teachers can use what fits for them, whether they wish to spend an hour or a week on this topic.
·Created by experts
Educators and experts in the fields of organ donation and transplant from across Canada and around the world have created many comprehensive and age-appropriate resources to help bring the topic of organ donation and transplantation to classrooms.
