Canadian Blood Services works with the organ and tissue donation and transplantation community to improve the system for all Canadians. Through national collaboration involving organ donation organizations and transplantation programs across Canada we are working to increase organ and tissue donation, increase access to transplants and improve patient outcomes.This website provides valuable information and data related to interprovincial organ sharing programs and services; professional education, including the Canadian Clinical Guide to Organ Donation; numerous publications, data and progress reports; as well as leading practices and clinical guidelines.

For the last decade the increasingly long waiting lists for cornea transplantation have consistently gained media and government attention. Wait times are often measured in years as opposed to months, meaning the rates of access to cornea transplantation in Canada are on par with, or lower than, the rates seen in some developing countries. Yet, despite all the attention the number of corneas transplanted in Canada has remained unchanged for the last six years and no focused and coordinated efforts have been expended to improve this system.

To receive this honour, a nominee’s landmark contributions must be recognized as both extraordinary and world class in the field of transfusion or transplantation medicine, stem cell or cord blood research in Canada and/or abroad.
