Interprovincial organ sharing (IPOS) programs and projects

For transplant candidates waiting for a life changing transplant, the best match might come from someone outside their home province. Donor organs can be shared with transplant candidates in other parts of Canada where there's a better match. Interprovincial Organ Sharing (IPOS) makes this possible.

Canadian Blood Services works with provincial and territorial health authorities, patients, hospitals, transplant centres, laboratories and organ donation organizations across the country to support the fair and effective sharing of organs between provinces. By expanding the pool of potential donors beyond provincial borders, these programs provide more transplant opportunities for patients waiting for a transplant.

IPOS programs include:

• Kidney Paired Donation Program
• Highly Sensitized Patient Program, including Willing to Cross unacceptable HLA and Paediatric 0/6 Class II matching
• High Status Heart Program

IPOS programs use the Canadian Transplant Registry (CTR), a secure national system that supports the National Organ Waitlist (NOW) and facilitates organ matching, allocation, sharing, and reporting across Canada. Together, these programs and the registry support a more connected transplant system and help ensure donated organs benefit the patients who need them most.
