Public Awareness - OTDT public opinion polling

Canadian Blood Services (CBS) has sought to understand the opinions of Canadians relating to organ and tissue donation and transplantation via various public opinion surveys conducted between 2001 and the present day. The most recent survey was conducted in 2022 among the General Public.

  • Approximately 89% of Canadians surveyed say they approve of organ and tissue donation. Yet only approximately 32% have registered a decision.
  • Those who have taken action to make their wishes known were encouraged by the idea of helping others after their death or helping others in need/saving lives.
Those who have not taken action would be encouraged by more information on the topic.

In 2021, Canadian Blood Services conducted an awareness and approval survey of ethnoculturally diverse populations in Canada to understand associated awareness and perceptions of both living and deceased organ and tissue donation.

The data collected through public opinion surveys helps to inform public education and awareness strategies and system improvements. Polling data is disseminated through the Public Education and Awareness Committee.
