Learning Objectives

After participating in this educational activity, participants should be able to:

• Describe the rationale of the pathology and treatment effects for oncology/hematology patient’s that impact the requirements for blood products.
• Identify the most common oncology/hematology pathology and treatments that require blood products.
• Discuss the physician’s decision process; risk versus benefits when ordering blood products.
• Recognize methods used to decrease the needs for blood products.

Program Description

Oncology/hematology patient populations are on the increase and utilization of blood products match this trend. This discipline’s disease and treatments impact the use of packed red blood cells and platelets. Understanding the effects of the disease and treatments on the bone marrow assists in acknowledging and managing the use these products. Identification of methods that can be utilized to minimize the use of blood products will be discussed.
