Learning Objectives

After participating in this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Identify how to establish clear, consistent protocols and processes that can be universally adopted throughout your organization.
  • Show how to compile information through data mining and involve hospital personnel through PBM defined activities.
  • Contrast successes and failures that occurred during the journey to patient blood management certification.

Program Description

The establishment of a Patient Blood Management (PBM) Program serves as a foundation for good medical practice and evidence-based care for optimizing the outcomes of patients who may be at risk for an unnecessary transfusion. Preparation for The Joint Commission/AABB certification for Patient Blood Management involves establishing clear, consistent protocols and processes that are universally adopted throughout an organization. Compiling information for certification can be overwhelming. This program will provide an overview of how to obtain PBM certification. Three different organizations: a University Hospital, a Hospital System and a large community teaching hospital will all provide experiences of their journey. Examples will be provided of what worked and what did not. This eCast is a must for anyone seeking PBM certification and wanting to take your program to the next level.
