Event details

This program is designed to define platelet refractoriness, detail common laboratory values associated with refractoriness, and recognize these in the context of a patient case. In addition, distinguish platelet refractoriness from other common platelet issues. This program will be a lecture-based presentation interlaced with case studies to demonstrate relevant laboratory and clinical findings.

Learning objectives

After participating in this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Define platelet refractoriness.
  • Identify causes of platelet refractoriness, recognize the signs within the context of a patient case presentation, and differentiate from other common platelet issues.
  • List the test results that indicate a patient is in a refractory state and calculate the corrected platelet count.
  • Define the calculated PRA, recognize the clinical significance, and discuss the implications for transfusion.
