The British Columbia Transfusion Medicine Rounds is a monthly 1-hour educational rounds with a multidisciplinary audience bringing together pathologists, clinicians, nurses, technologists, and researchers from British Columbia and throughout Canada who have an interest in Transfusion Medicine. 

For Fellows of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, The British Columbia Transfusion Medicine Rounds is a self-approved group learning activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification program of The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Learning objectives 

Learning objectives for presentation 1:

  • Describe scoring tools that have been used to describe massive transfusion protocol triggers amongst adult trauma patients.
  • Review the advantages and disadvantages of specific scoring tools and their impact on appropriate activation of an important resource.
  • Discuss the outcome data of the RABT score versus the better known ABC score and shock index and determine situational use of these scores in a clinical setting.

Learning objectives for presentation 2:

  • Describe the ROTEM-guided MHP transfusion algorithm at VGH.
  • Review the impacts of ROTEM-guided transfusion management and blood product utilization.
  • Discuss the outcome data of the trauma-MHP comparing ROTEM vs conventional coagulation tests.
