Objectives:

1.    To enumerate the various infectious agents transmissible by transfusion and to communicate the risk of each to a prospective blood recipient.
2.    To enumerate the various tests used to screen blood donors for transfusion-transmitted infections.
3.    To describe the risk management approach when confronted with an emerging infectious agent.
